First, consider a simple lock or latch. Many bins have handles you can loop a cable lock through or connect to a fixed point like a fence post. A sturdy bungee cord hooked underneath the lid and through the wheel axle can also deter casual grabbing.
Placement matters. If possible, keep your bins in a locked side yard, garage, or shed until collection morning. The less time they're unattended at the curb, the better. When out for pickup, try positioning them close to your home or a visible window, as increased visibility can discourage theft.
