Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do you recommend securing the bags inside an outdoor trash bin so they don't fall in?

That's a great question! There's nothing more annoying than watching a trash bag slip down into the depths of a dirty outdoor bin. Luckily, there are a few really simple tricks that work like a charm.

My top recommendation is to use a bungee cord or an elastic cargo net. Just place your bag in the can, pull the bag's edges over the rim, and then stretch the bungee cord across the top in a crisscross pattern. It creates a secure net that holds the bag firmly in place, even in windy weather. It's my go-to method.

Another fantastic solution is to invest in a fitted outdoor trash can liner. These are heavier-duty bags often with built-in drawstrings or flaps designed specifically to hook over the rim of standard-sized outdoor cans. They fit snugly and are much less likely to collapse inward.

For a quick DIY fix, look for bins with interior lip or hook features. Some outdoor cans have a small inner ridge about an inch or two below the top. You can tuck the bag's edges under this ridge to create a secure anchor point. No special tools needed!

Finally, don't overfill the bag. Leaving some slack at the top gives you more material to fold over the bin's rim, creating more friction and stability. Combining this with one of the methods above is your best bet for a foolproof setup.

Hope these tips help you win the battle against falling trash bags
