It's a common summer nuisance: you lift the lid of your outdoor trash bin and hear the unsettling buzz of bees or wasps starting to build a nest. Not only is this unpleasant, but it can also be a safety hazard. The key to discouraging them is to make your bin an unattractive and inaccessible home. Here are some practical, natural steps you can take.
First, focus on cleanliness. Bees and wasps are attracted to food residues and sweet smells. Rinse out food containers, especially soda cans, juice bottles, and yogurt cups, before tossing them. Regularly hose down the inside of your bin with a vinegar and water solution or a mild bleach solution to eliminate odors that attract them. Ensure your bin has a tight-fitting, secure lid that closes completely. If the lid is damaged, repair or replace it.
Next, use natural deterrents. Peppermint oil is a strong repellent for many insects. Soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them in small mesh bags around the rim of the bin or inside the lid.
