Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do you anchor an outdoor trash can so it doesn't get stolen or blown over?

Keeping your outdoor trash can from being stolen or knocked over by strong winds is a common concern for many homeowners. Fortunately, there are several effective and often inexpensive methods to secure your bin.

One of the simplest solutions is to add weight to the bottom of the can. You can pour a concrete base directly into the bottom of an empty can, or place heavy materials like bricks, sandbags, or large rocks inside a separate bag or container at the bottom. This lowers the center of gravity, making it much harder for the wind to tip it over.

For a more permanent solution, consider staking it down. If you have a dirt or grass area, you can use ground anchors or long, sturdy stakes designed for this purpose. Drill two small holes near the base of the trash can on opposite sides. Run a bungee cord, heavy-duty strap, or a coated metal wire through the holes and around the stake securely anchored in the ground. This physically tethers the can to the spot.

Another great option is to use a trash can strap or a security cable. Loop a durable strap around the body of the can and attach it to a fixed structure like a fence post, your house's wall, or a dedicated anchor point in the ground. A bike lock or a steel cable lock can also be threaded through the can's handle and around a solid object to deter thieves.

If you prefer a ready-made product, look for commercial trash can anchors. These are typically screw-in ground sockets or weighted plates that you place the can on or inside. They are specifically designed for this task and offer a clean, professional look.

Finally, strategic placement can also help. Position your trash cans in a sheltered area, such as against a wall or behind a fence, to minimize their exposure to strong gusts. By combining one of these anchoring methods with smart placement, you can ensure your trash cans stay right where you leave them.
