It's frustrating to wake up to scattered trash across your yard. Those nightly visitors—raccoons, possums, and stray cats—are clever, but you can outsmart them. The key is to eliminate the attraction and make your bins inaccessible.
First, consider your trash can itself. A sturdy, animal-proof container with locking lids or latches is your best defense. If a new bin isn't an option, secure your current one. Use bungee cords to strap the lid down tightly, or place a heavy brick or rock on top. Ensure the can has no cracks or holes that curious paws can exploit.
Where you place your trash is just as important. If possible, store your cans inside a locked garage or shed until collection morning. If outdoor storage is your only choice, keep them in a well-lit area. Motion-activated lights or sprinklers can startle animals and deter them from approaching.
What goes inside the can matters, too. Rinse out food containers, especially those that held meat, dairy, or sweet items, to remove enticing smells. For particularly pungent waste, like fish scraps, consider freezing it until trash day. Using heavy-duty, scent-blocking garbage bags can also help contain odors.
For persistent problems, you may need stronger deterrents. Sprinkling cayenne pepper around the base of the can can work, as animals dislike the scent. Commercial animal repellent sprays are also available. Remember, consistency is crucial. By making your trash an unappealing and difficult target, you can finally enjoy a clean and peaceful morning.
