Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

I need urban trash bins that are easy for my elderly customers to use, what should I look for?

For elderly customers, the best urban trash bins are less about style and more about reducing effort, reach, and guesswork. Look for bins with a comfortable waist-height opening, ideally around 30 to 36 inches from the ground, so people do not have to bend deeply or reach overhead. The opening should be wide enough to use without precise aiming, and the lid should require very little force. A light push flap, a large foot pedal, or a sensor lid can work well, but avoid heavy spring-loaded lids, narrow slots, and tricky latches that require strong hands or good balance.

Choose bins with clear contrast between the body and the opening, plus simple icons or large text for trash and recycling. Stable bases, rounded edges, and non-slip feet matter too, especially on uneven sidewalks or near seating areas. The liner system should be easy for staff to change and secure enough that bags do not slip down. Smooth, wipeable surfaces with few crevices will stay cleaner and look more inviting. Place bins on level paths near entrances, benches, and crossing points, and keep them well maintained. Before buying, test the opening force, height, and signage with a few older users if possible; small design details make a big difference in daily usability.
