Yes—but with a caveat. There are urban trash bins designed specifically to make life harder for raccoons and rats, though most are better described as resistant rather than completely proof.
Raccoon-resistant bins often use locking or gravity-latched lids, heavy metal bodies, twist-lock handles, or pedal-operated covers that are difficult for paws to pry open. Some public bins also have rounded tops, recessed openings, or weighted flaps that make climbing and reaching inside awkward. In dense cities, underground or semi-underground containers can help too, because the waste is sealed away from animals and only opened through a controlled hatch.
Rats are a different challenge. They are small, persistent, and excellent at exploiting gaps. A bin that stops a raccoon may still fail against rats if the lid does not close tightly, if there are chewable plastic edges, or if the bin is damaged. Rat-resistant urban bins usually rely on metal rims, tight-fitting lids, small or spring-loaded openings, smooth surfaces, and minimal gaps. Public education matters as well: overflowing bins, loose bags, and food waste left beside the container can attract rodents even when the bin itself is well designed.
So, do these bins exist? Absolutely. Many cities and manufacturers now offer raccoon-resistant and rodent-resistant waste containers for parks, alleys, transit stops, and food courts. But no design works without maintenance and proper use. A locking lid is only useful if people close it, seals stay intact, and bins are emptied often enough to prevent overflow. In other words, good urban bin design can make a real difference, but it is one part of a larger waste-management strategy.
