Honestly, it depends on where the bin is going and how often someone has to empty it. If you're comparing a standard public trash can with a built-in solar compactor, the extra money isn't automatically worth it. The idea sounds great: the bin uses solar power to compact waste, so it holds more between pickups, overflows less, and can send alerts when it's full. In busy downtown areas, transit stops, parks, or event districts, that can be a real win because you may cut collection trips and keep streets cleaner.
But the upfront price is only part of the story. Solar compacting trash bins cost several times more than ordinary bins, and they need batteries, sensors, compacting mechanisms, and occasional repairs. If a city buys them but doesn't maintain them, they can become expensive street furniture. Vandalism, blocked sensors, battery problems, and limited sunlight can also reduce the payoff. And in low-traffic areas, a normal bin with reliable emptying may be the smarter buy.
So are they worth the extra money? In dense, high-traffic urban spots where collection is frequent and expensive, yes, they often can be. They may reduce labor costs, improve cleanliness, and make public spaces look smarter. But for quiet streets or cities without a solid maintenance plan, I'd say no, or at least not yet. The best approach is a pilot: test a few solar compacting bins on your busiest routes, track collection savings and repair costs for a year, then scale up only if the numbers actually work.
