Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What's the biggest mistake cities make when buying urban trash cans?

In my experience, the biggest mistake cities make is buying urban trash cans as isolated products instead of as part of the whole waste collection system. A city will compare unit prices, pick a sleek-looking bin, and place it on the street—then discover that collection crews hate it, it fills too fast, it’s hard to clean, or it breaks down in a year. That’s not a trash can problem. It’s a procurement problem.

The smartest cities start with the service model, not the catalog. How often will the bin be emptied? What truck and lifting equipment will service it? Who will clean it? What types of waste will people put in it? Will it be exposed to rain, heat, salt, vandalism, or heavy foot traffic? If those questions aren’t answered first, even a well-made bin can become a costly mistake.

Another common error is focusing only on the purchase price. The real cost includes maintenance, cleaning, replacement parts, collection time, and public complaints. A cheap bin that needs frequent replacement or slows down crews is expensive. A slightly pricier bin that lasts longer and fits collection logistics can be far cheaper over its lifecycle.

Cities also underestimate public behavior. Bins that are too small overflow. Bins with confusing openings get contaminated. Bins placed in the wrong spots become invisible or inconvenient. And if residents and visitors can’t tell which bin is for what, the city pays for it later in cleanup and sorting costs.

The best approach is boring but effective: define a standard, run a pilot on a few streets, involve collection crews and maintenance staff, test for durability and accessibility, and calculate total cost of ownership. Buy urban trash cans as public infrastructure—not as street furniture chosen from a brochure. That single shift prevents most of the expensive mistakes I see.
