In coastal environments, the salty, humid air is highly corrosive. It accelerates rust and pitting on most metals. For stainless steel to hold up well, its protective chromium oxide layer must be robust. Lower-grade stainless steels (like some 400 series or cheap 201/202 grades) will often show surface rust, pitting, and discoloration surprisingly quickly in these conditions.
For true coastal resilience, you need a bin made from marine-grade stainless steel. Look for Grade 304 (A2 stainless) or, even better, Grade 316 (A4 stainless). Grade 316 contains molybdenum, which provides superior resistance to chloride corrosion from salt. While more expensive, it's the benchmark for marine hardware.
