Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What's the best way to secure the lid on an outdoor trash bin in a windy area?

That's a great question! Dealing with a flying trash can lid is a real headache. From my own experience and talking to neighbors, here are the most practical and effective solutions.

The simplest and most popular method is using heavy-duty bungee cords or straps. Hook one end to the bin's handle or a side lip, stretch it tightly over the lid's center, and secure it to the opposite side. For extra security, use two cords in a crisscross pattern. Rubber bungee cords are fantastic because they have some give, holding tight even when the bin is overfilled.

If you want a more permanent setup, consider installing lid straps or locks specifically designed for trash cans. You can find metal or heavy plastic locking straps that bolt or screw onto the bin's body, with a latch that clips onto the lid. These are very effective and look neat.

Adding weight is another straightforward trick. Place a heavy, weather-resistant object on top of the lid, like a brick, a large rock, or a paver stone. Just make sure it's heavy enough not to blow away itself! Some people even use a length of chain laid across the lid.

For a long-term investment, purchasing a trash bin with a built-in locking or clamping lid is the ultimate solution. Many "animal-proof" or "bear-resistant" models have excellent securing mechanisms that stand up to strong winds.

Finally, think about placement. If possible, move your bin to a more sheltered spot, like against a fence, wall, or inside a screened enclosure, to block some of the wind directly.

My top tip? Start with the bungee cord method—it's cheap, easy, and works surprisingly well. Combining a strap with a strategic location often solves the problem completely. Good luck, and may your lid stay put
