Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

My current urban trash can gets blown over in the wind, how can I prevent that?

That's a classic and frustrating problem, especially in urban areas where wind gets channeled between buildings. A runaway trash can is more than just a nuisance—it creates a mess and can even be a hazard. The good news is, preventing it is usually straightforward. Here are several effective strategies, from simple DIY fixes to ready-made products.

First, consider adding weight to the base. This is the most direct solution. You can place a few bricks or a concrete block inside the bottom of the can before lining it with a bag. For a cleaner look, fill a sealed plastic container with sand or gravel and place it at the bottom. Some companies sell specially designed weighted discs made for this purpose.

If your can has handles or a lip on the bottom rim, you can use bungee cords or sturdy straps to secure it to a fence, post, or deck railing. This tether method is highly effective but requires a solid anchor point.

Look into commercial trash can anchors or stakes. These are typically metal or heavy-duty plastic spikes that you drive into the ground. Your trash bin then slides over or locks onto the anchor, holding it firmly in place. They are a great permanent solution for cans kept on soil or grass.

Sometimes, prevention is about placement. Move your can to a more sheltered spot, like the leeward side of your house, a garage alcove, or behind a sturdy fence or wall. Even a few feet can make a big difference in wind exposure.

Finally, if your can is old and lightweight, the ultimate fix might be an upgrade. Invest in a heavier, more durable model designed with a low center of gravity. Look for cans labeled as "wind-resistant" or "heavy-duty," which often have features like weighted bottoms or integrated anchor points.

Start with the simplest and cheapest method—adding weight—and you'll likely solve the problem immediately. No more chasing your bin down the street on a windy morning
