It's a common frustration: you lift your outdoor trash can and find a pool of murky water at the bottom, slowly rotting the plastic or metal. Don't worry, preventing this is easier than you think. The key is managing moisture through drainage, elevation, and protection.
First, create an escape route for water. If your can doesn't have them, drill several small drainage holes in the very bottom. Use a drill bit suitable for plastic or metal. Place the holes around the perimeter to allow water to drain out freely without compromising the can's structural integrity.
Next, get the can off the wet ground. Never let it sit directly on soil or concrete. Use an elevated platform like a simple wooden pallet, specially designed trash can stands with wheels, or even concrete pavers. This creates an air gap underneath, promoting airflow and allowing any drained water to evaporate.
For added defense, consider a liner. A sturdy, waterproof bag as your primary liner is essential. For extra protection, place a secondary, inexpensive plastic bag or a cut-open heavy-duty garbage bag at the very bottom of the can before your main bag. This creates a sacrificial barrier.
Regular maintenance is crucial. Make it a habit to rinse out the can monthly with a mild disinfectant. After rinsing, tip the can completely upside down to let it air dry thoroughly before putting a new bag in. This prevents moisture and residue buildup.
Finally, choose wisely when replacing your can. Look for models labeled as weather-resistant or with built-in drainage plugs and elevated, ribbed bottoms designed to minimize water contact. A small investment in prevention saves you from the mess and expense of a rotten, leaking trash can.
