Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do you prevent the bottom of an outdoor trash can from rotting out?

That's a great question! A rotting trash can bottom is a common and smelly problem. Luckily, preventing it is pretty straightforward with a few simple habits. First, always use a sturdy, waterproof liner bag. This is your primary barrier, containing leaks and moisture from direct contact with the plastic. Second, never let the can sit flat on wet ground. Elevate it using bricks, concrete blocks, or a specially designed stand. This allows air to circulate underneath and prevents water from pooling. Third, give it a regular clean-out. Every few months, empty the can, scrub it with a mild detergent and water, and let it dry completely in the sun before putting a new bag in. For extra protection, you can apply a silicone sealant around the interior bottom seam if your can has one. Finally, consider your purchase. If you're in a wet climate, a rust-proof metal can or a heavy-duty plastic model with a thicker base might be a better long-term investment than a thin plastic one. A little proactive care saves you from the messy surprise of a collapsed bottom later on.
