Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I know what size trash bag to use for your specific outdoor trash bin model?

That's an excellent question! Figuring out the right bag size for your specific outdoor bin is simpler than you might think. You don't necessarily need the model number. The most reliable method is to grab a tape measure.

First, measure the *height* of your bin from the inside bottom to just below the rim. Add half that length to your measurement. This extra material allows the bag to fold over the rim, securing it and preventing it from falling in. Next, measure the *width* (or diameter for round cans) at the top. For rectangular bins, you'll need the length and width.

Armed with these dimensions—let's say Height + Overhang x Top Width—you can match them to bag specifications on the box. Most package labels list the bag's dimensions in gallons (capacity) and sometimes in inches. As a general rule, standard 30-35 gallon bags fit most common curbside bins. If your bin is particularly tall or wide, you may need a 40-55 gallon bag.

A pro tip: If your current bags are too loose and slip in, they're too big. If they're difficult to pull over the rim or tear easily, they're too small. The perfect bag will snugly line the can with enough overhang to secure it neatly.
