If your trash cans are constantly being knocked over by animals or you're worried about loose lids, don't rush to buy expensive new "secure" models. You can make your existing bins much more secure with a few simple tricks using items you probably already have at home.
First, address the lid. A loose lid is an open invitation. Use a bungee cord with hooks. Stretch it over the lid and hook each end under the bin's rim or handle. For a tighter seal, use two cords in an "X" pattern. No bungee cord? Heavy-duty rubber bands cut from an old inner tube work too.
Weight is your friend. Animals are less likely to tip a heavy bin. Place a few bricks or large rocks in the bottom of the trash bag or liner before you start filling it. This lowers the center of gravity. For extra stability, you can also place a cinder block or paver stone on top of the bagged trash before closing the lid.
Get creative with latches. For bins with handles on the side, use a carabiner, a small padlock, or even a sturdy paper clip to clip the handles together. For bins with flip lids, drill a small hole through the lid and the rim of the bin beneath it. Use a cotter pin, a small lock, or even a heavy-duty zip tie to pin them together.
Finally, consider placement and deterrents. Keep your cans in a garage or shed if possible. If they must be outside, try to secure them to a fence, post, or wall with a rope or chain. Sprinkling ammonia or cayenne pepper around the base (not inside) can deter curious animals, though this needs reapplication after rain.
These simple, low-cost solutions can save you from messy cleanups and give you peace of mind, all without a trip to the store.
