Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I stop the wind from blowing over my lightweight urban trash can on collection day?

It's so frustrating to come home and find your trash can toppled over, with garbage scattered everywhere by the wind. For lightweight urban bins, collection day can be a battle against the breeze. Here are some simple, effective solutions.

First, add weight to the bottom. Place a heavy brick, a large rock, or a sealed bag of sand inside the can at the very bottom, underneath your trash bag. This lowers the center of gravity. For a permanent fix, you can use adhesive weights or even pour a layer of concrete in the bottom.

Next, secure it to something solid. Use a bungee cord or a sturdy strap to lash the handle of your trash can to a fence post, a railing, or a deck leg. If you have a post or column nearby, this is the most reliable method.

Consider its placement. Move the can to a more sheltered spot for collection, like a corner formed by two walls, behind a larger object, or even temporarily inside a garage or shed with the lid open for easy access.

You can also try a commercial trash can anchor or stake, which you drive into the ground and attach to the can. Alternatively, place the empty can inside a larger, heavier container or a sturdy storage box to act as a buffer.

Finally, if all else fails, it might be time to invest in a heavier, wind-resistant bin model or one with a wider, more stable base. A little preparation can save you from a messy cleanup.
