It's frustrating to find your trash can missing on collection day. While it might seem like a minor nuisance, replacing bins costs money and time. The good news is that preventing theft is often straightforward with a few practical steps.
First, consider simply chaining or locking your cans together or to a fixed object. A sturdy bicycle lock or a dedicated trash can lock through the bin's handles can be a strong deterrent. If your can has handles, this is often the easiest solution.
Adding weight is another effective method. You can fill the bottom of the bin with a layer of heavy rocks or sandbags before inserting your trash bag. This makes the can much harder to quickly lift and carry away. For a more permanent setup, consider anchoring your trash can storage area with ground screws or a weighted base.
Strategic placement can also help. If possible, keep your bins in a locked garage, shed, or behind a fence until the morning of pickup. If they must be outside, place them in a well-lit area visible from your home's windows. Visibility is a thief's enemy.
Finally, mark your property. Use a permanent marker or engraving tool to write your house number and street name prominently on all sides of the bin. This not only deters theft but also helps neighbors or sanitation workers identify and return it if it does wander off.
