This creates a soft buffer that absorbs the impact. For a stronger hold and more cushion, use small squares of an old bicycle inner tube glued with strong outdoor adhesive.
If you're a bit more handy, creating a soft-close damper is highly effective. You can repurpose a slow-closing cabinet hinge or a pneumatic screen door closer.
