Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What's the best way to deodorize a plastic urban trash bin that's absorbed smells?

That's a common and frustrating problem! Plastic bins are porous and can really hang onto odors. Don't worry, it's totally fixable with some simple, natural methods. Here’s what I’ve found works best, from quick fixes to a deep clean.

First, for maintenance, sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda at the bottom of your empty, dry bin. It’s a fantastic odor absorber. You can also place a few dryer sheets down there. For a weekly refresh, wipe the interior with a cloth dampened with white vinegar or lemon juice—both neutralize smells.

If the smell is stubborn, it’s time for a deep clean. Take the bin outside. Create a cleaning paste with baking soda and a little water, or use a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Scrub every surface, especially the bottom and lid, with this solution and a brush. Rinse thoroughly.

The final, crucial step is to let it dry COMPLETELY in direct sunlight. UV rays are amazing at killing odor-causing bacteria and helping to "air out" the plastic. Before you put a new bag in, ensure the bin is bone-dry to prevent mildew.

To prevent future smells, always use a liner bag, try to keep liquids out, and give it a quick rinse and that sun bath every month or so. A small box of baking soda left open at the bottom between bag changes works wonders for ongoing freshness.
