Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

I live in an area with a lot of rain, will this outdoor trash can fill up with water?

That's a very common and practical concern for anyone living in a rainy climate. The short answer is yes, a standard outdoor trash can without proper features can definitely fill with water during heavy or consistent rainfall. This can lead to a mess: it makes the bin much heavier to move, can cause premature rust or damage, and creates a stagnant water pool that attracts mosquitoes and causes unpleasant odors.

However, the good news is that this problem is entirely preventable. Here’s what you can do:

First, look for trash cans specifically designed for outdoor use. Many modern models are built with this in mind. The key feature to seek is integrated drainage holes at the bottom. These small holes allow any collected rainwater to slowly seep out, preventing the bin from becoming a mini-reservoir.

If your current can doesn't have these, you can carefully drill a few small holes in the bottom yourself. Just ensure you place it on a surface where the water can run off, like a patio slab or gravel.

The second most important factor is a tight-fitting, waterproof lid. A secure lid is your first line of defense. It dramatically reduces the amount of rain that gets inside in the first place. Make sure the lid closes snugly and doesn't have large gaps.

Also, consider the placement of your bin. If possible, position it under a slight overhang or in a more sheltered area of your yard, without blocking pathways. Even moving it a few feet can reduce direct exposure.

Finally, a simple routine helps. After a big storm, it's a good idea to tip the can slightly to check for and empty any accumulated water. Keeping bags securely tied also prevents waste from getting soggy and sticking to the bottom.

So, while rain is inevitable, a flooded trash can doesn't have to be. By choosing a can with drainage and a good lid, and being mindful of its placement, you can keep your outdoor waste area much cleaner and more manageable, no matter how wet the weather gets.
