This creates a water-repellent barrier that prevents ice from bonding the surfaces. For an already frozen lid, never force it open, as you might damage the plastic. Instead, gently pour warm (not boiling) water around the seal or use a hairdryer on a low setting to melt the ice. You can also use a commercial de-icing spray made for car doors. For long-term prevention, consider storing your bin in a sheltered spot, like against a garage wall, to minimize direct exposure to snow and sleet. A simple habit of ensuring the lid is completely closed after use also prevents melting snow from seeping into the seam and refreezing.
