Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I secure an outdoor trash can so it doesn't get blown over by the wind?

That's a common and frustrating problem! A tipped-over trash can is a messy hassle. Luckily, there are several simple and effective ways to secure it. First, consider adding weight. Placing a few bricks or a concrete block inside the bottom of the bin (before the bag) lowers the center of gravity. You can also use specially made trash can weight systems. Second, use straps or bungee cords. Secure the can to a sturdy fence post, deck railing, or an anchor point on your house wall. Just ensure the lid can still open. Third, invest in an anchor kit. These are metal stakes or earth screws you drive into the ground, with a cable or strap that attaches to the can's handle. They are very effective. Fourth, strategic placement matters. Position your can in a sheltered spot, like behind a wall, garage, or dense shrubs, to block the wind. If you buy a new can, opt for a heavy-duty model with a wide, flat base, as they are more stable. A combination of these methods—like weighting the bin and placing it in a sheltered corner—usually works best for high-wind areas.
