Noticing a crack in your plastic outdoor trash bin can be frustrating, but don't rush to replace it just yet. With a few common materials and some simple steps, you can often fix it yourself and extend its life for seasons to come. The key is to choose the right method based on the crack's size and location.
For small hairline cracks, a strong plastic adhesive or super glue designed for polyethylene or polypropylene (the most common bin materials) can work well. First, thoroughly clean and dry the area around the crack. Apply the adhesive according to the product instructions, pressing the crack closed firmly. For added strength on the inside of the bin, you can reinforce it with a patch made from another piece of plastic, like from a old container, glued over the crack.
For larger or more structural cracks, a two-part epoxy plastic repair kit is your best bet. These kits often include a mesh patch for reinforcement. Clean the area with rubbing alcohol to remove all dirt and grease. Mix the epoxy as directed and apply it over the crack. For serious cracks, embed the mesh patch into the epoxy on the inside of the bin, then apply another layer of epoxy over it. This creates a very strong, waterproof seal. Let the repair cure completely for at least 24-48 hours before using the bin again.
A handy tip for hard-to-hold cracks is to use clamps or strong tape to hold the plastic together while the adhesive sets. Always perform repairs in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves. With a proper repair, your bin can be back in service, saving you money and keeping usable items out of the landfill.
