Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I clean an outdoor trash can properly?

Cleaning your outdoor trash can might not be the most glamorous chore, but it's essential for preventing odors, pests, and bacteria buildup. Here’s a simple, effective method to get it done.

First, take your bin to a well-ventilated area, like your driveway or yard. Put on a pair of sturdy rubber gloves to protect your hands. Using a garden hose, spray out any loose debris.

Next, mix a cleaning solution. You can use dish soap and warm water, or for a deeper clean, add one part white vinegar or bleach to ten parts water. Be cautious with bleach and ensure good ventilation. Scrub the entire interior and exterior of the can thoroughly using a long-handled brush with stiff bristles. Pay special attention to the bottom and sides where grime accumulates.

After scrubbing, rinse the can completely with your hose until all soap and dirt are gone. To disinfect and eliminate odors, you can spray the interior with a disinfectant spray or a diluted bleach solution. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before giving it one final rinse.

The most important step is to let the trash can dry completely in the sun before putting a new bag in. This prevents mold and mildew. For ongoing maintenance, sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottom of the dry bin to help control odors between deep cleanings.
