The most common issue is with metal bins, especially older galvanized steel models. The lids or the rim around the top can sometimes have a rough, unfinished metal edge that's surprisingly sharp. Even heavy-duty plastic bins aren't immune; if they crack or break, the fractured plastic can create jagged, sharp points. I've also seen bins where the manufacturer's mold lines weren't properly smoothed, leaving a thin, rigid ridge.
These edges are dangerous for a few reasons. Obviously, they can cause cuts or lacerations when you're handling bags. More concerning, they can tear the garbage bags themselves, causing leaks and messes. For families with children or pets who might play near the bins, it's an added hazard you want to eliminate.
What can you do? First, run your hand (carefully!) along the inner and outer rims, lid contact points, and any handles. Feel for any rough or protruding metal or plastic. For minor sharp edges on metal, a metal file or sandpaper can smooth them out. For plastic, fine sandpaper can often soften a rough mold line. For larger cracks or splits, especially in plastic, it's usually safer to replace the bin altogether.
When buying new bins, I now make a point to check the finish. Look for models with rolled or beaded edges on metal lids, and inspect plastic bins for smooth seams.
