Use warm, soapy water and a stiff brush to remove dirt, grime, and salt deposits that trap moisture. Rinse it well and let it dry completely in the sun. This is the most important step—never apply a protectant to a damp surface. Once bone-dry, apply a protective coating. A clear acrylic spray sealant or a rust-inhibitive spray paint designed for metal works perfectly. For a galvanized steel can, you can use a wax-based automotive spray or a clear coat meant for galvanized surfaces. Focus on the bottom, the lid rim, and any seams where water pools. Place your can in a spot with good airflow, if possible, and avoid constantly wet ground. Consider a simple wooden pallet or bricks to elevate it slightly. If you notice small chips or scratches in the paint or coating, touch them up quickly before rust sets in. With these simple habits, your metal trash can will stay looking good and functioning well for years longer.
