Dealing with a frozen-shut trash can is a frustrating winter chore. Luckily, preventing it is easier than you think. Here are some practical tips to keep your bin functional all season.
First, moisture is the enemy. Always drain liquids from your trash bags before disposal. Placing a layer of absorbent material like old newspapers, cardboard, or cat litter at the bottom of the can will soak up any residual dampness and create a barrier between the trash and the plastic.
Consider applying a non-stick cooking spray or a silicone-based lubricant to the rim and lid seal. This thin layer can prevent ice from bonding the surfaces together. For a more robust solution, use a commercial de-icer spray around the lid's edge.
If you have space, storing your can in a garage or shed shields it from the worst snow and ice. If it must stay outside, position it in a sunny spot and away from downspouts where water can drip and freeze. A simple waterproof cover can also keep snow and sleet off the lid mechanism.
For a proactive approach, try the "barrier method." Line your can with a large plastic bag or a specially designed bin liner. When full, the entire bag lifts out, minimizing contact between the waste and the can's interior walls.
