Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What is the best way to anchor an outdoor trash can without damaging the pavement?

Keeping your outdoor trash can from tipping over in the wind or from curious animals is a common challenge, but you don't have to resort to drilling into or damaging your concrete or asphalt pavement. Here are several effective and non-destructive methods.

A simple and popular solution is to use weight. You can place heavy, flat objects like pavers, cinder blocks, or large rocks inside the bottom of the can liner before inserting the bag. For a cleaner look, consider purchasing a commercial weighted base designed to sit under your trash can, adding significant stability.

Another great option is to use straps or bungee cords. Secure one end to a sturdy, fixed point like a fence post, deck railing, or wall anchor (if permitted), and loop the other around the handle or body of the trash can. This method restrains movement without putting stress on the pavement surface.

For standalone cans on a concrete slab, you can create a simple containment area. Position two heavy planters, large decorative stones, or a commercially available trash can corral on either side of the bin. This creates a barrier that prevents rolling and minimizes tipping.

If you need a more permanent yet still reversible solution, look into specialized ground anchors or trash can locks. These often involve driving a metal stake into a nearby grass or soil area and using a cable or lock to secure the can. The pavement itself remains completely untouched.

The key is to avoid methods that require screws, adhesives, or anything that alters the pavement surface. By using weight, strategic restraint, or products designed for this purpose, you can keep your area tidy and your trash secure while fully preserving your driveway or patio.
