Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

My outdoor trash bin keeps blowing over in the wind, how can I prevent that?

Ah, the classic windy day struggle! A rolling, tumbling trash bin is a messy nuisance we've all faced. Don't worry, securing it is easier than you think. Here are several practical solutions, from quick DIY fixes to more permanent options.

First, add weight to the base. This is the simplest method. You can place a few heavy bricks or large, smooth rocks in the bottom of the bin (inside a bag to avoid dirt). For a cleaner approach, fill an old milk jug or gallon container with water, sand, or pebbles and place it at the bottom.

If weight isn't enough, try restraining it. Use sturdy bungee cords or ratchet straps to secure the handle of your bin to a nearby fence post, deck railing, or a ground anchor. Just ensure the anchor point is solid.

Consider the bin's location. Moving it to a more sheltered spot, like the leeward side of your house, garage, or a fence, can dramatically reduce wind exposure. Even placing it in a corner creates a natural windbreak.

For a dedicated solution, invest in a trash can enclosure or storage bench. These structures protect bins from wind and improve curb appeal. Alternatively, purchase a trash can anchor kit, which typically involves driving a stake into the ground and strapping the bin to it.

You can also buy bins designed for stability. Look for models with a wider, weighted base or built-in anchor points. Sometimes, simply using two bins and placing them side-by-side can help them support each other.

Finally, don't overfill your bin. A top-heavy can is much more likely to catch the wind and tip. Keep the lid securely fastened, as an open lid acts like a sail.

Start with adding weight or relocating your bin. For persistent high winds, combining methods—like using a weighted bin that's also strapped to a fence—is your best bet for a tidy, storm-proof setup.
