Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

Can the liners for these outdoor trash cans be compostable or biodegradable?

That's a fantastic question and really gets to the heart of making our daily routines more sustainable. The short answer is yes, there are compostable and biodegradable liners available for outdoor trash cans, but there are some very important details to understand to use them correctly.

First, let's clarify the terms. "Biodegradable" means a material will break down naturally over time with the help of microorganisms. However, this can happen in a landfill or the environment and might leave behind microplastics or other residues. "Compostable" is a stricter standard. It means the liner is certified to break down into non-toxic, nutrient-rich compost (humus) within a specific timeframe in a commercial composting facility's controlled conditions.

For your outdoor bins, especially those for yard waste or food scraps destined for composting, certified compostable bags are your best eco-choice. Look for certifications like BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) or OK compost HOME. These bags are designed to break down along with the organic waste inside an active compost pile.

However, there's a big caveat: they require the right environment. Simply throwing a compostable bag into a regular landfill trash can defeats the purpose. In a sealed landfill without oxygen, it may not break down much faster than a plastic bag. You need to send it to a commercial composter or have a well-maintained home compost system.

For general outdoor trash (like patio or poolside waste that isn't purely organic), a truly compostable liner might not be practical. In these cases, a responsible approach is to use a recycled plastic bag or, if you must, a biodegradable option, and focus on reducing contamination so the bag's contents can be recycled.

My practical advice? Match the liner to the bin's purpose. Use certified compostable bags for your organic waste collection bin that goes straight to your compost pile. For general outdoor cans, consider going liner-less for dry waste or using a reusable, washable plastic bin to minimize single-use items altogether. It's all about making the most informed choice for your specific situation.
