Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What's the best way to repair a cracked plastic outdoor trash bin?

Noticing a crack in your plastic outdoor trash bin can be frustrating, but don't rush to replace it just yet. With a few common materials and some elbow grease, you can often restore it to full functionality. The best repair method depends on the crack's size and location.

For small to medium cracks, a two-part epoxy plastic adhesive or a specialized plastic welding kit are your best bets. First, thoroughly clean and dry the area around the crack. For an epoxy repair, sand the plastic to create a rough surface for better adhesion, apply the mixed epoxy, and press the crack closed. You can reinforce it with a patch of fiberglass mesh embedded in the epoxy. For plastic welding, use a soldering iron or a dedicated plastic welder to melt the edges of the crack together, sometimes adding a plastic zip tie as filler material. Once fused, sand it smooth.

For larger cracks or splits, consider using a high-strength waterproof tape like fiberglass-reinforced repair tape. Clean the area, apply the tape tightly over the crack, and smooth out any air bubbles. This creates a strong, flexible seal from the outside.

No matter which method you choose, let the repair cure fully for at least 24-48 hours before using the bin again. A proper fix can add years to your bin's life, saving you money and keeping waste neatly contained.
