Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I prevent the bottom of my outdoor trash bin from rotting out?

That's a common and frustrating problem! A rotting bin bottom usually means constant moisture exposure. Don't worry, it's often preventable with a few simple habits. First, give your bin a regular clean-out. Hose it down, scrub it with a mild detergent (a vinegar-water solution works well), and let it dry completely upside down before putting a new bag in. This prevents grime and moisture from festering. Next, always use a sturdy, fitting trash bag. If the bag breaks, liquids will pool at the bottom. Consider adding an extra layer of protection—a cheap plastic tray or a cut-to-size piece of plywood (painted or sealed) placed inside the bottom can shield it from direct contact with waste liquids. Where you place the bin is crucial. Keep it on a hard, well-drained surface like concrete or patio stones, not directly on grass or dirt. Even better, elevate it slightly. You can use simple bricks, concrete blocks, or a specially made plastic pallet to allow air to circulate underneath and prevent water from sitting against the plastic. Finally, if your bin is old or already compromised, a waterproof silicone sealant applied to the interior seams and bottom can patch small cracks. For a heavily damaged bin, a full plastic liner might be your best temporary fix. A little proactive care can significantly extend the life of your outdoor trash can.
