That's a great question! It's something our design team spent a lot of time on. The key is a combination of smart capacity management and physical design features. First, many of our newer models are "smart" bins equipped with sensors that monitor fill-level in real-time. This data is sent to municipal waste collection teams, allowing for dynamic pickup schedules before the bin ever reaches critical capacity, which is the primary cause of overflow.
Physically, the design focuses on containment. We use a wide, rigid opening or chute that guides waste into the main compartment, but the internal bin often has a narrower neck or a compaction mechanism. This helps distribute waste more evenly and prevents it from piling up and blocking the opening. A crucial feature is the sealed or tightly fitting inner liner system. When the main lid is closed, it creates a seal over the inner bag, which minimizes wind scatter and deters pests like birds and rodents from pulling trash out.
For the base, we've moved away from flat platforms. Instead, bins are mounted on a single, central pedestal or have a raised, sloped base plate. This eliminates the flat ledge or shelf at the bottom where litter and liquids typically accumulate. Any spilled liquids or small debris simply falls through to the ground below, where it's more visible and easier for street sweepers to clean, rather than getting trapped and creating a messy, sticky ring around the bin itself. The goal is to make the system proactive—preventing the problem before it happens—and easier to maintain when cleaning is necessary.
