Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

I see so many outdoor trash cans getting blown over in the wind; how can I prevent that?

It's a frustrating and all-too-common sight after a windy day: trash cans toppled over, spilling garbage across the driveway or yard. Not only is it a nuisance to clean up, but it's also bad for the environment and can attract pests. The good news is, preventing this is easier than you might think. Here are several effective, often low-cost strategies to keep your bins upright.

First, consider the placement of your cans. Positioning them in a sheltered spot, like against a garage wall, behind a fence, or in an alcove, can significantly reduce their exposure to strong gusts. Simply moving them out of the wind's direct path is your first line of defense.

If relocation isn't an option, adding weight is a highly effective method. You can place a heavy brick or a flat paver stone inside the bottom of the can (under the bag). For a more integrated solution, fill an old milk jug or gallon container with sand or gravel and place it at the bottom. For larger, rolling carts, consider purchasing commercial trash can weights or straps designed to anchor them to a fixed object, like a fence post or wall anchor.

Getting creative with DIY restraints can also work wonders. Use sturdy bungee cords with hooks to strap the lid down tightly and secure the handle to a nearby sturdy object. For cans without handles, you can drill small holes near the top rim and use a rope or cable tie to tether it to a permanent structure. Just ensure the cord is tight enough to prevent excessive movement.

Finally, investing in the right equipment can be a permanent fix. Look for trash cans marketed as "heavy-duty," "wind-resistant," or with a low center of gravity. Some models have wide, weighted bases or built-in locking lids and wheels that can be engaged to act as a brake. While an upfront cost, it saves time, mess, and frustration in the long run.

By implementing one or a combination of these tips—strategic placement, adding weight, using restraints, or upgrading your bin—you can finally win the battle against the wind and keep your trash where it belongs.
