Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What's the best way to clean and sanitize an outdoor trash can?

That's a great question! A clean outdoor trash can is crucial for keeping pests away and preventing nasty smells. Here's the method I've found works best.

First, pick a sunny day and move the can to a grassy area or driveway. Put on some sturdy gloves and old clothes. Empty the can completely, scraping out any stuck-on debris.

Next, give it a good pre-rinse with a garden hose to loosen grime. Now, for the deep clean. Mix a cleaning solution – you can use dish soap, a dedicated all-purpose cleaner, or even a vinegar and water mix for a natural option. Using a long-handled scrub brush with stiff bristles, scrub the entire interior and exterior. Pay extra attention to the bottom and the rim where gunk builds up.

After scrubbing, rinse it thoroughly until the water runs clear. This is the key sanitizing step. You can use a commercial disinfectant spray (follow the label instructions), or make a bleach solution (about 1/2 cup of household bleach per gallon of water). Spray or apply the sanitizer to all surfaces and let it sit for at least 5-10 minutes to kill germs.

Finally, give it one last rinse. Tip the can to drain all water and let it air-dry completely in the sun before putting a new bag in. For ongoing care, a monthly cleaning and a sprinkle of baking soda at the bottom can help control odors between deep cleans.
