Noticing a dent in your sturdy galvanized steel trash bin can be frustrating. It affects the look and can sometimes hinder the lid from closing properly. The good news? You can often fix this yourself with some simple tools and patience. Here's a natural, step-by-step approach I've used successfully.
First, empty and thoroughly clean the bin. Let it dry completely. This gives you a clear workspace and prevents slipping. For a shallow dent, the simplest method is to push it out from the inside. Wear a pair of sturdy work gloves for protection. If you can reach the dent from inside the bin, place the palm of your hand or your fist against the center of the dent and apply firm, steady pressure. Sometimes, steady pushing from the inside is all it takes for the metal to pop back into place.
For more stubborn dents, you'll need a rubber mallet or a regular hammer with a block of wood. The wood or rubber prevents you from damaging the galvanized coating. Place the wood block on the outside of the dent. From the inside, gently tap the area opposite the block with your mallet or hammer. Work from the edges of the dent towards the center using light, controlled taps. Don't rush it; the goal is to coax the metal back, not to force it.
If the dent is severe and the metal is creased, it might not return perfectly to its original shape, but you can significantly improve it. After working the dent, inspect the area. If the protective zinc coating was scratched during the process, it's wise to touch it up with a cold galvanizing spray paint from a hardware store. This prevents rust and protects the exposed steel.
Finally, remember that galvanized steel is tough but not indestructible. While this fix works for many common dents, extremely large or sharp crumples might require professional help. But for most everyday dings, this hands-on method will have your bin looking presentable and functioning well again in no time.
