The answer isn't a simple yes or no; it hinges heavily on the quality of the plastic.

Most urban plastic trash cans are made from polyethylene, a material chosen for its toughness and resistance to corrosion. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is particularly common. While inherently UV-stabilized to a degree, prolonged, direct sun exposure is its primary environmental enemy. Over time, the ultraviolet rays break down the polymer chains in the plastic. This leads to the most visible sign of degradation: fading and discoloration. A vibrant green bin can turn into a pale, chalky version of itself.

More critically, the plastic becomes brittle. This loss of flexibility and impact resistance is the real failure point. A brittle bin is prone to cracking, especially at stress points like handles, hinges, or the rim. A minor impact from being emptied or knocked over can cause significant damage that wouldn't occur with a new, pliable unit.

The lifespan varies dramatically. A cheap, thin-walled bin with minimal UV inhibitors might become brittle and fail within a few years in a sunny climate. In contrast, a premium, commercially-rated bin made with high-quality, heavily UV-stabilized resin (often indicated by a "UV-protected" label) can last a decade or more, maintaining its structural integrity despite color fading.

To maximize durability, look for bins labeled as UV-resistant or UV-protected. Darker colors like forest green or black generally fade less noticeably than lighter ones, though they absorb more heat. Regular cleaning and avoiding the storage of hot ashes can also prolong life. In summary, while no plastic is entirely immune to the sun, investing in well-made, UV-protected bins is crucial for ensuring they hold up well in direct sunlight, providing reliable service and reducing long-term replacement costs.
