Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

My outdoor trash can lid is always freezing shut in the winter, any solutions?

That frustrating moment when you go to take out the trash on a freezing morning, only to find the lid is completely frozen shut is all too common. Don't worry, you're not alone, and there are several easy ways to solve this winter nuisance. The key is to prevent moisture from freezing the lid to the bin's rim. One of the most effective methods is to create a moisture barrier. Simply apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or cooking spray around the top rim of the can where the lid makes contact. This prevents water from bonding and ice from forming a tight seal. For a longer-lasting solution, spray the rim with a silicone-based lubricant, which won't freeze and is water-resistant. If you're caught off guard and the lid is already frozen, never try to force it open as you might break the plastic. Instead, gently pour warm (not boiling) water around the seam of the lid to melt the ice. You can also use a hairdryer on a warm setting to carefully thaw the ice. A little prevention goes a long way. If possible, store your trash can in a garage or a sheltered area out of direct rain and snow. Keeping the lid clean from food residue and debris will also minimize the chances of it sticking. With these simple tips, you can say goodbye to wrestling with your trash can on icy mornings.
