Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I prevent liquids from pooling at the bottom of my outdoor trash can?

Dealing with a soupy, smelly mess at the bottom of your outdoor trash can is a common frustration. This pooled liquid not only creates awful odors but also attracts pests and makes taking out the trash a messy chore. Fortunately, preventing this is straightforward with a few simple strategies.

The most effective long-term solution is to create a drainage system. If your trash can is stationary and doesn't need to be moved often, you can drill a few small holes in the bottom. Choose the lowest point of the can and drill 3-4 holes about 1/4 inch in diameter. Place a layer of small rocks or bricks underneath the can where you drill to elevate it, allowing the liquid to drain out freely and preventing a permanent puddle from forming beneath it.

For those who don't want to drill into their can, using absorbent materials is a great alternative. Before you line your can with a bag, place a layer of absorbent material at the bottom. Excellent options include:

* Crumbled Newspaper: It's highly absorbent and readily available.

* Cat Litter: A cup or two of clay-based or silica gel cat litter will soak up a significant amount of liquid.

* Paper Towels or Shredded Paper: These can also help manage minor leaks and spills.

Your choice of trash bag also plays a crucial role. Always use bags that are labeled "leak-proof" or "extra strong." Ensure the bag is large enough to fit your can without stretching thin at the bottom, which is a common point of failure. Before tying the bag closed, try to press out any excess air; this can help reduce the space where liquids can settle outside the bag.

Finally, regular maintenance is key. Don't let trash, especially food waste, sit in the can for extended periods. Give the empty can a quick rinse with a garden hose and a squirt of disinfectant every few weeks. Propping the lid open slightly on a sunny day will allow the interior to air dry completely, preventing mold and mildew growth.

By combining proper drainage or absorption with sturdy bags and regular cleaning, you can effectively eliminate liquid pooling, resulting in a much cleaner and more pleasant outdoor trash area.
