Figuring out the right bag size for your outdoor trash can is simpler than you might think. The key is to measure your can before you buy. Here’s a straightforward method.
First, grab a measuring tape. You'll need two main measurements: the height and the circumference.
For the height, measure from the very bottom of the can's interior straight up to the top rim. Don't forget to add a few extra inches (5-7 inches is a good rule) to this measurement. This "overhang" is crucial—it allows you to cuff the bag over the rim, which keeps it securely in place and prevents it from falling inside.
Next, measure the circumference. Wrap your tape around the widest part of the can, which is usually near the top. If your can is rectangular, measure the length and width instead, and then calculate the perimeter (2*length + 2*width).
Now, take these numbers with you when you shop for bags. Trash bag packaging will always list its dimensions. Look for a bag whose "width" (which usually refers to the half-circumference or flat width) is close to or slightly larger than your can's circumference divided by two. The bag's length should be equal to or greater than your can's height plus the overhang.
A bag that is too small will be prone to tearing and slipping down into the can. A bag that is excessively large is wasteful and can look sloppy. Taking two minutes to measure will save you from messy spills and ensure a clean, secure fit every time you take out the trash.
