It's considerate to wonder if you're overloading your trash bin, as our sanitation workers perform a physically demanding job daily. A bin that's too heavy can lead to injuries for them and damage to the collection equipment. So, how can you tell if it's too much?
First, listen. If you hear a loud, straining groan or a heavy thud when the bin is being lifted by the automated truck arm, it's likely overweight. Second, perform the "lift test" yourself. If you, an average adult, cannot comfortably tilt the bin or roll it to the curb with one hand, it's probably too heavy for the crew who lifts it hundreds of times a day.
Look for visible signs. Is the lid unable to close completely? Is the plastic of the bin bulging or cracking under the pressure? These are clear indicators of overfilling. A good rule of thumb is to keep the bin's weight under 50 pounds (approximately 23 kilograms). Common culprits for excess weight are construction debris, wet soil, and waterlogged materials.
If you have heavy items, consider breaking them down into smaller loads or taking them to a disposal site yourself. By being mindful of the weight, you contribute to a safer and more efficient waste collection process for everyone.
