Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

My outdoor trash bin always gets blown over, are there heavier models or ones with anchors?

It's a frustrating and all-too-common sight: your outdoor trash bin toppled over by a strong gust, spilling its contents across the yard. You are definitely not alone in this struggle. The good news is there are several effective solutions, ranging from heavier models to simple anchoring techniques.

First, consider upgrading to a heavier-duty bin. Many manufacturers offer commercial-grade or "heavy-duty" trash cans. These are typically constructed from thicker, more durable plastic or even rubber and have a significantly heavier base, making them much more resistant to tipping. Look for models specifically marketed as "wind-resistant" or "animal-proof," as they often feature a low center of gravity.

If a new bin isn't in the budget, you can add weight to your existing one. A simple DIY method is to place a concrete block or a few heavy pavers in the bottom of the bin (under the trash bag). This lowers the center of gravity and makes it much harder for the wind to get a grip. For a cleaner look, you can also purchase a weighted base designed to sit inside the bottom of the can.

For the ultimate security, especially in consistently windy areas, an anchoring system is your best bet. You can buy commercial trash can anchoring kits that typically involve a ground anchor and a strap or cable that secures the bin to the ground. Alternatively, you can create your own by driving a sturdy stake into the ground next to the bin and using a bungee cord or rope to tether them together. Just ensure the lid can still be fully opened for collection.

Finally, think about placement. Positioning your bin in a more sheltered spot, like against a fence or the side of your house (while still allowing easy access for collectors), can dramatically reduce its exposure to the strongest winds. By combining a heavier or weighted bin with a strategic location, you can finally win the battle against the breeze and keep your trash where it belongs.
