Living in the city comes with its own set of challenges, and during storm season, watching your trash bin tumble down the street is a frustrating one I know all too well. Not only is it a nuisance to retrieve, but it creates litter and can even cause damage. Over the years, I've tested several methods and found some simple, effective solutions.
First, consider weighting down your bin. This is the most straightforward approach. You can place a few bricks or a concrete block at the bottom of the empty bin before lining it with a bag. For a more discreet option, you can drill holes in the bottom and use a bungee cord to secure a weight to it. If you have a fence or a sturdy post, bungee cords or ratchet straps are your best friend. Simply loop a cord through the bin's handle and anchor it securely. This prevents the bin from tipping over and taking a journey.
Strategic placement is another key factor. If possible, move your bin to a more sheltered location before a storm hits. Tucking it in a corner between a wall and a fence can significantly reduce the wind's impact. Just ensure it's still accessible for collection. For a more permanent solution, consider installing a simple bin enclosure or a ground anchor kit designed for this purpose.
Finally, don't underestimate the power of teamwork. If you have multiple bins, cluster them together. A group of bins is much harder for the wind to displace than a single, solitary one. By combining a few of these strategies—like weighting the bin and strapping it to a fence—you can rest easy knowing your bin will stay put, even when the weather gets wild.
