Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

My outdoor trash can always smells so bad in the summer, is there a solution for that?

That foul odor emanating from your outdoor trash can during summer is a common but solvable problem. The heat accelerates the decomposition of waste, creating that unmistakable stench. Fortunately, you don't need expensive products to combat this.

Start with a deep clean. Empty your can completely and scrub it with a mixture of dish soap and water. For stubborn smells, use a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, or sprinkle baking soda inside and let it sit before rinsing. This neutralizes odors at the source.

Prevention is key. Always use sturdy trash bags without tears. Sprinkle a layer of baking soda, cat litter, or even dried coffee grounds at the bottom of the can before inserting a new bag. These materials are excellent at absorbing moisture and neutralizing smells.

Keep your can in a shaded area if possible, as direct sunlight heats it up and speeds up bacterial growth. Ensure the lid closes tightly to keep flies and other pests out. For ongoing maintenance, consider placing an odor-absorbing pouch inside the lid—fill a small breathable bag with activated charcoal or cedar chips.

With these simple steps, you can enjoy a fresher-smelling outdoor space all summer long. A little routine maintenance makes all the difference
