Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What's the best way to mount an outdoor trash can to a concrete sidewalk?

Mounting an outdoor trash can to a concrete sidewalk is a great way to prevent it from tipping over in the wind, getting dragged away by animals, or even stolen. The most secure and permanent method involves using concrete anchor bolts. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide on how to do it right.

First, you'll need to gather your materials. This includes a heavy-duty trash can with a flanged base, concrete anchor bolts (like sleeve or wedge anchors), a hammer drill, a masonry bit that matches the diameter of your anchors, a wrench, safety glasses, and a marker.

Start by positioning the trash can exactly where you want it on the sidewalk. Use a marker to trace the inside of the mounting holes from the trash can's flange onto the concrete. Move the can aside, and you'll see the exact spots where you need to drill.

Put on your safety glasses. Using the hammer drill and the correct-sized masonry bit, drill straight down into the concrete at each marked spot. The depth of the hole should be slightly deeper than the length of your anchor bolt. Be sure to blow away any concrete dust from the holes.

Next, place the trash can back in position, aligning the holes in its base with the holes you just drilled in the concrete. Insert the anchor bolts through the trash can's flange and into the holes. Use your wrench to tighten the nuts. As you tighten, the anchor will expand inside the concrete, creating an incredibly strong, permanent hold.

For a less permanent but still effective solution, you can use a high-strength construction adhesive to glue a mounting bracket to the concrete. Alternatively, if drilling is not an option, consider a heavy, weighted base that the trash can sits inside. This won't stop a determined thief, but it will prevent most tipping and rolling.

Whichever method you choose, a securely mounted trash can will keep your outdoor space cleaner, safer, and more organized.
