If your outdoor trash bins are constantly being tipped over by raccoons, dogs, or the wind, you don't necessarily need to invest in expensive new "animal-proof" models. With a little creativity and some common household items, you can significantly improve the security of your existing bins. Here are several effective and low-cost strategies.
First, address the lid. A loose lid is an open invitation. A simple and highly effective solution is to use bungee cords. Stretch one or two cords over the top of the lid, hooking the ends onto the bin's handles or rim. This creates a strong, flexible lock that is difficult for animals to dislodge. If you don't have bungee cords, a sturdy rope or even a repurposed bike tire inner tube can work in a similar fashion.
Second, add weight to make the bin harder to tip. You can place a heavy brick or a large, flat rock on top of the lid. For a more integrated solution, consider placing a few bricks or a bag of sand at the bottom of the bin, inside the bag. This lowers the center of gravity and makes the entire structure much more stable against pushing and shoving.
Third, secure the bin to a stationary object. If your bin is kept against a fence, wall, or post, use a rope or a chain to loosely tether it. Ensure it's not so tight that you can't move it for collection, but secure enough that it can't be dragged away or easily knocked over.
Finally, be mindful of what you throw away. The smell of food is the biggest attractant. Whenever possible, rinse out food containers before disposal. For particularly smelly waste, like meat packaging, consider double-bagging it or even freezing it until trash day to minimize odors.
By implementing these simple DIY fixes, you can outsmart pests, prevent messy spills, and keep your property cleaner, all without spending money on a new bin. A little effort can make your current trash cans far more secure and functional.
