First and foremost is the height and clearance. The opening or throw area should be between 15 and 48 inches from the ground. This range ensures that a person using a wheelchair can approach the bin side-on and reach the opening without straining. Equally important is providing adequate knee clearance—at least 27 inches high, 30 inches wide, and 17 to 19 inches deep—underneath the bin to allow a wheelchair to pull up close.
The opening mechanism is another critical feature. Bins should be easy to open without requiring a tight grip, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. Lever-operated lids that can be pushed with a fist or forearm are excellent. Even better are hands-free, sensor-operated bins that open automatically, which are ideal for individuals with limited hand dexterity or strength.
The bin's placement is part of its accessibility. It must be located on an accessible route with a stable, firm, and slip-resistant surface. There should be a clear ground space of at least 30 by 48 inches in front of the bin to allow for a wheelchair approach, either parallel or perpendicular.
Other vital features include high visual contrast between the bin and its surroundings, as well as between the opening and the body of the bin, to aid those with low vision. Braille or tactile signage can also be a helpful addition. Finally, the bin should be easy to maintain and service, ensuring it doesn't become obstructed or overflow, which would negate all other accessible design efforts.
