Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

My outdoor trash bin always smells awful in the summer, what can I do?

That dreaded summer trash bin smell is a common problem, but you don't have to live with it. The combination of heat and organic waste creates a perfect storm for nasty odors. Fortunately, a few simple habits can make a world of difference.

First, give your bin a deep clean. Empty it completely, then hose it down. Scrub the inside with a long-handled brush using a mixture of dish soap and warm water, or a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water. For stubborn smells, use a bleach solution (one cup of bleach to a gallon of water), but ensure you rinse it thoroughly afterward. Let it dry completely in the sun before putting a new bag in.

Prevention is key. Always use strong, high-quality trash bags to prevent leaks. Try to keep wet organic waste, like food scraps, in a separate container or sealed bag before placing them in the bin. Sprinkling a layer of baking soda at the bottom of your bin is a fantastic and natural way to absorb odors; you can also use cat litter for the same purpose.

For ongoing maintenance, keep your bin out of direct sunlight if possible, as the heat accelerates decay and odor. Make it a habit to rinse the bin weekly and after emptying particularly smelly trash. By following these easy steps, you can win the battle against summer trash bin odors and enjoy a fresher outdoor space.
