Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I keep the inside of my outdoor trash can from getting sticky and gross?

That sticky, gross residue in your outdoor trash can is a common headache, but it's completely preventable. It usually comes from liquid spills and food waste decomposing at the bottom. Here’s a simple, effective strategy to keep your bin clean and odor-free.

First, the golden rule is to use a liner. A high-quality, heavy-duty trash bag is your best defense. Make sure it's large enough to fit your can without overhanging too much, and always tie it securely before disposal. For an extra layer of protection, consider placing a layer of old newspaper or a few paper towels at the very bottom of the can before inserting the bag. This will absorb any accidental leaks.

Next, establish a regular cleaning routine. Don't wait for the smell to tell you it's time. Every time you take out the full bag, give the empty can a quick rinse with a garden hose. For a deeper clean, once a month, scrub the interior with a long-handled brush using a mixture of dish soap and warm water. For tough grime and sanitization, a solution of white vinegar and water or a diluted bleach spray works wonders. Always rinse thoroughly and let the can dry completely in the sun before putting in a new bag.

To combat odors and moisture between cleanings, use natural absorbents. A generous sprinkle of baking soda at the bottom of the can (under the liner) will neutralize odors. You can also add a few drops of an essential oil like tea tree or lemon on the outside of the bag for a fresh scent.

Finally, be mindful of what you throw away. Whenever possible, rinse out food containers like jars, cans, and yogurt pots before tossing them. For particularly wet or messy food scraps, consider containing them in a smaller bag or compostable bag first. By implementing these simple habits—using a good liner, cleaning regularly, and being smart about waste—you can say goodbye to that sticky, gross mess for good.
